1981 First vaccine for hepatitis B.   Death of Leo Kanner (Austrian-American psychiatrist and physician known for his work related to autism )   Ioannis Yannas, professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, collaborates with John Burke, MD, chief of trauma surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, to develop artificial skin. The membrane is successfully implanted onto Mark Walsh, saving his life from injuries sustained in an explosion in an aerosol-can factory.        
1982   Seattle dentist Dr. Barney Clark was the first person implanted with the Jarvik-7, an artificial heart intended to last a lifetime. William DeVries an American surgeon performed the surgery.        
1983 HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is identified.

Dr. Luigi Mastroianni, Jr., performed the first successful human in-vitro fertilization in the Philadelphia region.
       
1984 Leprosy Vaccine made          
1985   Dr. Michael S. Brown, M’57 won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discoveries on the regulation of cholesterol metabolism.
       
1986   The University of Pennsylvania Medical Center was formed, comprising the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the School of Medicine.        
1987     Ben Carson, leading a 70-member medical team in Germany, was the first to separate occipital craniopagus twins.        
1988 Patricia Bath became the first African American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical invention.
Patricia Bath's is a method for removing cataract lenses, transformed eye surgery, using a laser device making the procedure more accurate.
