Upto Now NY colonial Gov. William Cosby died. George Clarke became the new governor (1736). Giovanni da Verrazano, Florentine navigator, explored from Cape Fear to Newfoundland and discovered New York Bay and the Hudson River of present-day New York harbor (1524). Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States, was born in Hyde Park, N.Y (1882). The Encyclopedia of New York City, edited by Kenneth T. Jackson, was published (1995). Statue of Liberty constructed in 1884. 1799: Bank of Manhattan Company opened in NYC. 1805: Yellow fever epidemic, during which as many as 50,000 people are said to have fled the city New York Yankees established in 1901
