Melbourne wins the 45th VFL Premiership (Melbourne 19.13 (127) d Essendon 13.20 (98))
The New York Yankees won the World Series, beating the Brooklyn Dodgers by 4 games to 1.
Chicago Bears 37-9 New York Giants for the NFL championship.
  The ninth South American Basketball Championship in Mendoza is won by Argentina.
 
1942 Victorian Football League - Essendon wins the 46th VFL Premiership (Essendon 19.18 (132) d Richmond 11.13 (79)) World Series: St. Louis Cardinals (NL) defeat New York Yankees (AL), 4 games to 1.
Washington Redskins win their second NFL Championship 14-6 over the Chicago Bears at Washington, D. C..   The tenth South American Basketball Championship in Santiago is won by Argentina.
   
1943 Victorian Football League - Richmond wins the 47th VFL Premiership (Richmond 12.14 (86) d Essendon 11.15 (81)) World Series: New York Yankees defeats St. Louis Cardinals, 4 games to 1. Chicago Bears 41-26 Washington Redskins in the NFL championship game in Chicago
  The eleventh South American Basketball Championship in Lima is won by Argentina.    
1944 Victorian Football League - Fitzroy wins the 48th VFL Premiership (Fitzroy 9.12 (66) d Richmond 7.9 (51)) World Series: St. Louis Cardinals defeats St. Louis Browns, 4 games to 2.
Green Bay Packers14-7 New York Giants in New York City for the NFL title.        
1945 Victorian Football League - Carlton wins the 49th VFL Premiership (Carlton 15.13 (103) d South Melbourne 10.15 (76))
World Series: Detroit Tigers defeated Chicago Cubs, 4 games to 3.
Cleveland Rams 15-14 Washington Redskins at Cleveland, Ohio to win the NFL championship. The Rams relocated after the season to Los Angeles.   The twelfth South American Basketball Championship in Guayaquil is won by Brazil. Byron Nelson wins 18 tournaments in a calendar year to set an all-time PGA TOUR record.  
1946 FA Cup - Derby County beat Charlton Athletic 4-1 after extra time. 1st Test Cricket between Australia and New Zealand The Chicago Bears win the NFL crown by defeating the New York Giants 24-14 in New York.
  the National Basketball Association formed as the Basketball Association of America Sam Snead travels to St.Andrews to compete in the first post-war British Open, and is victorious, winning by four shots from Johnny Bulla and Bobby Locke.

The U.S. Women's Open is instituted. Patty Berg is the first winner.
World Snooker Championship: Joe Davis beats Horace Lindrum 78-67, then announces his retirement from the event after this, his 15th consecutive victory.
1947 First Division - Liverpool win the 1946-47 title.

FA Cup - Charlton Athletic beat Burnley 1-0 after extra time
    Mildred "Babe" Zaharias becomes the first American to win the British Women's Open, at Gullane.

Golf is televised for the first time, in a local St. Louis telecast of the U.S. Open.

Jim Ferrier becomes the first Australian to win a major championship.
World Snooker Championship: Walter Donaldson beats Fred Davis 82-63
1948 First Division - Arsenal win the 1947-48 title.

FA Cup - Manchester United beat Blackpool 4-2.
World Series: The Cleveland Indians defeat the Boston Braves, 4 games to 2. India's first series as an independent country

First five-day Tests in England.
Philadelphia Eagles 7-0 Chicago Cardinals in the National Football League championship game. The game was played in a blizzard.
India won the Gold Medal in London Olympic Games (men's competition)   Henry Cotton wins his third British Open, at the age of 41.

Ben Hogan wins eleven tournaments during the season, including both the U.S.Open and PGA championships.

The U.S. Junior Amateur is instituted. Ken Venturi loses to Dean Lind in the first final.
World Snooker Championship: Fred Davis beats Walter Donaldson 84-61.

1948 Summer Olympics takes place in London, United Kingdom
United States wins the most medals (84), and the most gold medals (38).

1948 Winter Olympics takes place in St. Moritz, Switzerland
Norway and Sweden both win the most medals (10 each), and the most gold medals (4 each).
1949 First Division - Portsmouth win the 1948-49 title.

FA Cup: Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Leicester City 3–1.
The New York Giants sign their first black players: Negro Leaguers outfielder Monte Irvin and pitcher Ford Smith. Both men are assigned to Jersey City. Irvin will star for the Giants, but Smith will not reach the major leagues. Cleveland Browns 21-7 San Francisco 49ers for the All-America Football Conference championship. After the 1949 season, the Browns, 49ers and original Baltimore Colts would joined the NFL for the 1950 season.

Philadelphia Eagles 14-0 Los Angeles Rams for the NFL championship.
  The sixth European basketball championship, Eurobasket 1949, is won by Egypt.

The fourteenth South American Basketball Championship in Asunción is won by Uruguay.
Bobby Locke becomes the first South African to win the British Open.

Louise Suggs wins the U.S. Women's Open by a record margin of 14 strokes.
World Snooker Championship: Fred Davis beats Walter Donaldson 80-65.
1950 1950 World Cup held in Brazil. Uruguay are the winners after beating Brazil in the final group decider. World Series: New York Yankees win 4 games to 0 over the Philadelphia Phillies Grand Slam in tennis men's results:
