Sep 11 Attacks by Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda


19 men affiliated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners, two of which were crashed into the two World Trade Center towers in New York City. The third team crashed a plane into the Pentagon and the fourth plane crashed into a field near the town of Shanksville in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Excluding the 19 hijackers, a confirmed 2,973 people died and another 24 remain listed as missing as a result of these attacks

Without any shots fired, American troops pulled a bearded and haggard Saddam from his hiding place near his hometown Tikrit. He had a pistol and was hiding in a dirt pit 6 feet in the ground

India's most notorious bandit Koose Muniswamy Veerappan killed in a police 'encounter' (October 18, 2004)


Perhaps the most famous sandalwood smuggler in the history of mankind, it's estimated that Veerappan killed 120 people, mostly policemen and forestry officials


Tsunami kills more than 200,000 in Indian Subcontinent (Dec 26, 2004)


An earthquake shook the ocean floor in the Indian Ocean near Indonesia which resulted in the tsunami which killed people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India and as far away as the African countries of Somalia and Madagascar. Waves reached a height of 65 feet (20 meters)

2005     Bollywood star Amrish Puri dies at the age of 72 from a brain haemorrhage (Jan 12 2005)       Pope John Paul II dies at 84 (Apr 2, 2005)


A boy from small-town Poland grew up to become pope, put an end to the Soviet Union and the Red Block and, in the opinion of some, became "the man of the century"

Earthquake in Kashmir (Oct 8, 2005)


A massive 7.6-magnitude earthquake devastated the mountainous Kashmir border region between India and Pakistan, killing an estimated 80,000 people

2006     PricewaterhouseCoopers predicted this year that India's film business will earn $1.12 billion by the year 2006, from $617 million in 2001   M F Hussain arrested and charged with hurting sentiments of people because of his nude portraits of Hindu gods and goddesses (February, 2006)
